Mikuni Carb Leaking Overflow

I have an idea for a crude test of the float needle: With one carb bowl removed, I want to pour rubbing alcohol into the carb intake pipe and then test the needle by pushing it closed by hand. It looks as if it's an overflow tube of some sort, no connecting lines, dumps fuel on ground. In addition, fuel may flow into the engine unrestricted, which, if the engine is not running, can cause hydraulic lock - that is, as the piston rises on the compression stroke it cannot compress the fuel. fuel is coming out of the bottom "drain" on the carb. When I fitted it back to the bike it was fine untill I had given the bike a run and then the float stuck and it leaked petrol every where from the float chamber overflow.
